What is Sezzle, and how does it work?
What is Sezzle, and how does it work?
Sezzle provides a payment option where you can buy now and pay later.
When you place an order through Sezzle, a unique approvals system reviews your account to determine the repayment plan that can be offered. In most cases, it's 25% of the order total due up-front (also called your "down payment" or "first installment"), with the remaining amount divided up across three more installments, each due two weeks apart. There is no interest on Pay Later orders for over thousands of merchants .
Pay in four 25% down, 25% biweekly (4 installments)Pay in two 50% down, 50% in two weeks (2 installments)Pay in one (Pay in Full)100% at checkout
When your order is placed, Sezzle pays the merchant in full for the order immediately—so the merchant has their funds and can begin processing your order.
How does Sezzle Up impact my credit?
How does Sezzle Up impact my credit?
Credit reporting is only applicable to shoppers enrolled in Sezzle Up. If you are not enrolled in Sezzle Up, we don’t report your payment history to credit bureaus.
If you decide to enroll in Sezzle Up, you are opting to report your payment history to the credit bureaus.
What is reported to the credit bureaus?
At the end of each month, we review the overall standing of your account, including your outstanding balance and payment status to Equifax.
Payment statuses:
- On-time payments - Payments not outstanding beyond 30 days will be reported as on time.
- Failed or late payments - Payments overdue by 30 days or more will be reported on the monthly report beginning in the first month that it's 30 days overdue. For example, if you have a failed payment on January 10th, it will not be reported in January. However, if it's still unresolved by the end of February, it would be reported in February and every additional month that it isn't resolved. The longer a payment is failed on your account, the worse the impact will be on your credit score.
You can view how each month has been reported to the bureaus in the Sezzle app by selecting "Account" and then "Sezzle Up" under the Benefits section. This page will display if a particular month has been reported to the credit bureaus and if it was reported with on-time payments ("Current") or with any delinquencies ("Not Current"). If there is nothing filled in for the month, then that means we haven’t reported anything for that month yet.
How do I view my credit score?
Most Sezzle Up users use Borrowell to view their credit score.
If you have more questions about how your credit can be impacted by lines of credit, credit cards, or loans, we recommend contacting a trusted financial advisor.
Why was I declined for an order?
Why was I declined for an order?
Sezzle is committed to financially empowering shoppers by supporting responsible spending. Therefore, our system does not approve 100% of orders. Your order may be declined, even if the order amount is less than your estimated spending power, as Sezzle considers various factors during the approval process. In addition to your individual estimated spending power, there may be order limitations specific to each merchant.
Please note: The Sezzle Support Team cannot manually approve any orders or increase spending power.
If you are having trouble getting approved, please review the common decline reasons below and some recommendations that may help.

Common Decline Reasons:
Decline ReasonDescriptionHow to Solve
Failed Payment(s)
Declined due to a failed payment that has occurred on an order.
This decline also may occur if one of your payments is in the "pending" or "processing" statuses.
Login to your dashboard and pay off any failed payments.
If you have a failed payment on your account, you won't be able to place new orders until the failed payment is paid off. Learn more about resolving failed payments here.
If you have payments in the "processing" or "pending" statuses, wait five business days and try placing your order again. Click here to learn more about processing payments.
Insufficient Spending Power
Declined due to the order amount being above your estimated spending power1.
Lower the amount of your order.
How do I know how much I can spend with Sezzle?
Insufficient Merchant-Specific Spending Power
Declined due to the order amount being above a specific merchant’s spending power. Merchant spending power does not apply to all merchants, may vary by store, and is a percentage of your estimated spending power.
Lower the amount of your order at that store and/or make a few payments to increase your estimated spending power at this particular store.
Rescheduled Payment(s)
Declined due to one or more rescheduled payments on your account.
Review all upcoming payments. If you have any rescheduled payments on your account, you won't be able to place new orders until they are all paid off. To pay an installment, log into your account in your app or at dashboard.sezzle.com, and navigate to the active orders in which you have rescheduled payments.
Please note that paying off these installments with a bank account may take up to 4 business days to process before your account is open for future purchases.
Maximum Open Order Limit
Declined due to having too many orders open with a particular merchant or group of merchants.
All Sezzle Premium brands have a maximum open order limit of two purchases - to make a third Sezzle Premium purchase, you'll need to pay off one first.
With any non-premium merchant, pay off an outstanding order with the merchant you are attempting to purchase to place new orders.
Maximum Order Amount
Declined due to attempting an order over the maximum amount allowed for that merchant.
Lower the amount of your order.
Minimum Order Amount
The minimum order amount required was not met. The minimum order amount is at least $20 USD (including tax and all other fees) for all Sezzle purchases, but it could be more based on a minimum order amount set by the merchant.
Canadian minimum order requirements will be CAD and converted from USD.
Increase the amount spent at that merchant by adding more items and attempting the transaction again. You may also be presented with alternate payment options such as Pay in Full or Pay in 2.
If you cannot add more items or increase the dollar amount of your transaction, you will need to use a different payment method.
New User Restriction
Declined due to placing a second order within 25 hours of your first order.
Wait 25 hours after placing your first order and try again.
New users can only place one order but can make new orders once that new user period is over.
Single-Day Order Amount
You've attempted to place over $2,500 for Pay Later orders or $1,500 for Pay in Full orders in 24 hours (USD or CAD, dependent on your location).Wait until the next day to complete your purchase or lower your order amount.
Thirty (30) Day Order Amount
You've attempted to place over $5,000 for Pay in Full orders in a 30-day period (USD or CAD, depending on your location).Wait until the next day to complete your transaction or lower your order amount.

What is Pay in 1 (or Pay in Full) and how does it work?
Sezzle’s Pay in Full option allows you to build Sezzle spending history, earn up to 2% back in Sezzle Spend on eligible Pay in Full orders, and, where relevant, have seamless Virtual Card checkout.
How does Pay in Full work?
While shopping online, in the Sezzle app or your dashboard, simply select “1 payment” at checkout.
Like regular Sezzle purchases, there is no interest, and the merchant is paid in full immediately, so they can start processing your order as soon as it is placed.
How do refunds work if I use the Pay in Full feature?
Because the order is paid off, if a refund is issued, it will be returned to the payment method used to complete the order. See How do refunds work?
My order was paid in full by mistake. Can I get a refund or revert to the pay-in-4 plan?
Once an order is placed, there is no way to change payment plans, cancel, or refund the purchase without going through the merchant.
Is there a maximum amount of orders I can place using Pay in Full?
Yes, a limit of $1,500 per purchase and $5,000 per month can be placed using Pay in Full.
Things to remember:
- Other order declines may still apply. See Other decline scenarios for more information.
- The amount of Sezzle Spend earned on Pay in Full orders will vary by merchant.
- Pay in Full transactions will not be reported to credit bureaus if enrolled in Sezzle Up.
What is Pay in 2 and how does it work?
What is Pay in 2 and how does it work?
Pay in 2 is an option offered at select checkout that allows you to split a purchase into two payments: 50% down at the time of purchase and the remaining 50% two weeks later.
Why Pay in 2?
Pay in 2 helps you build positive payment history, and if you opt in to Sezzle Up, the payments you make on these orders will be reported to credit bureaus to help build your credit history.
Pay in 2 may be presented at checkout alongside other payment plans, or when a Pay Later payment plan is unavailable for the following scenarios:
- You are attempting a purchase over your current estimated spending power. See, How do I know how much I can spend with Sezzle?
- The order is below the minimum order amount at the merchant. See, Is there a minimum to use Sezzle?
- You’ve reached the maximum number of open orders with the merchant or with Sezzle.
- You have a rescheduled payment.
If you prefer to Pay Later or are still having trouble with checkout, see common decline reasons here and how to solve them.
Why am I not shown a Pay in 2 offer?
Pay in 2 payment plans may not be available at all merchants and are often not shown on orders above $500. Some exceptions may apply depending on the merchant and other criteria, including but not limited to repayment activity.
Can Sezzle increase my estimated Spending Power?
Can Sezzle increase my estimated Spending Power?
Unfortunately, our agents cannot raise estimated spending power manually due to our system's unique approval process and flexibility. Our process looks at various factors when determining your estimated spending power, including your repayment history with Sezzle and the overall financial picture. Because we evaluate estimated spending power regularly, yours will change over time, and with good repayment history, it should increase.
Here are a few things to keep your account in good standing with Sezzle:
Stay on top of your payments.
Failing payments on your account can affect your estimated spending power, even if you resolve them immediately. Be sure you have payment reminder notifications turned on in your dashboard so you don't miss a payment. Learn more about failed payments here. Remember that you can reschedule payments ahead of their due date if something has changed and you cannot make a timely payment.
Pay off outstanding installments.
As you pay off outstanding installments, the amount of the paid installment may increase your estimated spending power toward your next purchase.
Ensure at least 25% of the transaction amount is available on your payment method.
To complete a transaction, you must have a down payment of at least 25% of the order total available on your payment method. Ensuring you have this amount available before attempting a transaction does not guarantee that you will be approved for an order but increases the likelihood of approval.
While we cannot guarantee that your estimated spending power will increase after performing the above actions, taking the above steps will demonstrate a positive repayment history and increase the likelihood of your estimated spending power rising over time.
